# Beyond UX: When Testing Surfaces Strategic Gaps.

User testing is the perfect way to uncover user experience issues like confusion, unclear content, and journey friction. But sometimes, **it surfaces something bigger**.

I recently ran a moderated user testing project for a **niche online marketplace**. We were focused on how prospective customers navigated listings and evaluated sellers — the core journey.

The findings? Numerous valuable UX tweaks. But also: **deep, strategic challenges** the client hadn’t fully anticipated.

## **The Biggest Issues Weren’t UX at All**

During testing, participants repeatedly raised **concerns that went far beyond the interface**:

- _“I’m not sure my money would be safe here.”_ ( **trust and safety**)
- _“There aren’t many listings for this type of product, which makes me think it’s not a credible site?”_ ( **low volume as a proxy credibility signal**)
- _“Nothing’s near me, so it’s not really useful.”_ ( **geography** and relevance)
- _“I don’t know why I would use this instead of [bigger competitor]?”_ ( **no clear differentiator**)

It quickly became clear that **without more listings, user confidence would remain low**, and with users unwilling to travel too far, **nearby supply was critical**. Equally, **stronger buyer protections were needed**.

Those aren’t classic UX issues. They’re not something a content tweak or journey refinement can fix.

They’re proposition and supply-side challenges.

## **UX Can Be Solid — and Still Not Be Enough**

In fact, the client has made good UX improvements since the testing:

- Streamlined the listing design
- Added verification and trust markers
- Improved the visual polish

The **proposition gaps are now being addressed** separately.

## **What This Shows (Again)**

User testing isn’t just about polishing the journey.

Done well — with real users, probing questions, and space for honest feedback — it can reveal misaligned propositions, weak positioning, and strategic blind spots.

And that’s a good thing.

Because fixing UX is relatively inexpensive. Fixing strategic issues after you’ve scaled? Not so much.

## **One Final Thought**

If your product’s not converting, **don’t just test the UX**.

Test the _entire_ experience — from discovery through first impression to final reassurance — and be ready to hear hard truths.

Sometimes, the most significant insight is that your users want something you’re not yet offering.
